James ELLIS and Harriet HUGHES family – passenger list

James ELLIS, his wife Harriet HUGHES and their children, James, Harriet, William, Charles, Edwin, Sarah and Thomas immigrated to the United States on 21 June 1862. They arrived in New York City aboard the Ship Atmosphere.

James ELLIS and Harriet HUGHES family

James ELLIS was born 9 September 1814 in West Dean, Sussex, England. James was the son of Robert ELLIS. He married Harriet HUGHES on 26 May 1845 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. Harriet was born 13 December 1823 in Pulborough, Sussex, England. Her father was James HUGHES.

On 21 June 1862, James, Harriet and their children arrived in New York City aboard the Atmosphere. They moved to Wood County, Ohio. James died on 21 December 1879 in Washington Township, Wood County, Ohio. Harriet died on 12 October 1896. They were both buried in the Plain Township Cemetery in Wood County.

Their children were:

James ELLIS born 14 September 1846 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. He married Margaret WARNER on 8 November 1882 in Erie, Monroe County, Michigan. He died on 5 August 1912 in Weston, Wood County, Ohio and was buried in Weston Cemetery.

Harriet ELLIS was born January 1848 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. She married Henry HOOBLER on 6 Jun 1869 in Wood County, Ohio. They divorced before 1895. She died on 3 May 1928 in Toledo, Ohio.

William Theophilus ELLIS was born 1 September 1851 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. He married Louise M DURET on 3 November 1885 in Broomfield, Isabella County, Michigan. He died on 19 February 1934 and was buried in Weston Cemetery.

Charles Edward ELLIS was born 13 July 1853 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. He married Josephine WHITNEY on 25 March 1879 in Wood County, Ohio. He died on 29 April 1922 in Weston, Wood County, Ohio and was buried in Weston Cemetery.

Edwin John ELLIS was born 27 January 1855 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. He married Laura BLUNTSCHLY on 27 August 1895 in Wood County. He died on 7 March 1928 in Center Township, Wood County, Ohio. He was buried in Milton Township Cemetery in Wood County.

Sarah Ann ELLIS was born 4 January 1858 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. She married Robert YOUNGS on 24 February 1880 in Wood County, Ohio. She died on 18 March 1941 in Weston, Wood County, Ohio and was buried in Weston Cemetery.

Thomas ELLIS was born in 1860 in Binderton, Sussex, England. He died at the Massillon State Hospital in Stark County, Ohio on 6 June 1938.

John ELLIS was born in 1862 in Wood County, Ohio. He married Sylvia Mandella BLUNTSCHLY on 6 December 1894 in Wood County. He died on 13 February 1957 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio and was buried in Milton Township Cemetery in Wood County.

Anna ELLIS was born 13 February 1868 in Plain Township, Wood County, Ohio. She died on 14 September 1887 and was buried in the Plain Township Cemetery.

Margaret WARNER death certificate

Margaret WARNER, widow of James ELLIS and presumed widow of Amos WARD, died on 16 May 1927 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.

Note: Her daughter Clara was the informant and filled in her own parents names as the parents of the deceased.

Margaret WARNER and Amos WARD marriage

Margaret WARNER moved to Toledo, Ohio after the death of her first husband, James ELLIS, in 1912. There she married Amos WARD on 15 November 1915.

According to the Toledo city directories, she was living alone again by 1918. In 1919, she is listed as a widow. By 1923, she was back to using the surname ELLIS.

James ELLIS and Margaret WARNER marriage

James ELLIS and Margaret Warner were married on 8 November 1882 in Erie, Monroe County, Michigan.

James ELLIS and Margaret WARNER family

James ELLIS was born 14 September 1846 in Westbourne, Sussex, England. He was the son of James ELLIS and Harriet HUGHES. He immigrated with his family on 21 June 1862 to the United States.

James served in Company M and Company B of the 2nd US Calvary between 1871 and 1876 at Fort D A Russell in the Wyoming Territory. He enlisted on 4 October 1870 in Toledo, Ohio. He deserted on 16 January 1871 and was apprehended on 23 August 1871. He was discharged on 7 April 1876. James and his wife Margaret both applied for a military pension and were both denied.

On 8 November 1882, he married Margaret WARNER in Erie, Monroe County, Michigan. Margaret was born 19 October 1861 in Kansas, Sandusky County, Ohio to David WARNER and Elizabeth MOWRY. James and Harriet lived in Wood County, Ohio. James died on 5 August 1912 in Weston Township, Wood County, Ohio.

After James’s death, Margaret moved to Toledo with their children. There she married Amos WARD on 15 November 1915. She died on 16 May 1927 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio. James and Margaret are buried in the Weston Cemetery in Wood County.

James and Margaret had the following children:

Clara Belle ELLIS was born 9 September 1886 in Whitehouse, Lucas County, Ohio. She married Merle Lester LONG on 9 September 1904 in Wood County. She died on 15 March 1935 in Washington Township, Wood County, Ohio and was buried in Weston Cemetery.

Charles William ELLIS was born 20 September 1889 in Swanton, Lucas County, Ohio. He died 3 September 1911 in Liberty Township, Wood County, Ohio. He was buried in Weston Cemetery.

James Edward ELLIS was born in October 1892. He married Inez McKEE on 13 December 1917 in Lucas County, Ohio. He died on 3 August 1967 in Toledo.

Sarah Alice ELLIS was born 13 April 1894 in Weston, Wood County, Ohio. She married Thomas O BARNES on 30 April 1917 in Lucas County, Ohio. She died on 5 December 1958 in Toledo.

Robert ELLIS was born 19 April 1897 in Weston, Wood County, Ohio. He married Merle McATEE on 11 November 1918 in Lucas County, Ohio. He died on 30 May 1970 in Toledo and was buried in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dewey ELLIS was born 8 August 1898 and died on 5 August 1899 in Plain Township, Wood County, Ohio.

Frank Benjamin ELLIS was born 2 January 1902 in Liberty Township, Wood County, Ohio. He  married Mabel M RUMPF on 26 August 1920 in Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan. He died on 6 February 1965 in Toledo.

Frank Benjamin ELLIS and Mable RUMPF marriage

Frank Benjamin ELLIS married Mabel M RUMPF on 26 August 1920 in Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan.

Frank Benjamin ELLIS and Mabel RUMPF family

Frank Benjamin ELLIS was born 2 January 1902 in Liberty Township, Wood County, Ohio. Frank was the son of James ELLIS and Margaret WARNER. At age 18, he married 16 year old, Mabel M RUMPF on 26 August 1920 in Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan. Mabel was born circa 1904 to Christian John RUMPF and Bertha MUSCH. They lived in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. Mabel died on 26 July 1964 in Toledo. Frank died on 6 February 1965 in Toledo.

They had 5 children:

Laverne ELLIS was born 11 December 1921. She married Eugene MEEKER. She died 27 March 1991 in Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio.

Arlene ELLIS was born 21 February 1923. She married William SPEICHER. She died on 21 July 1982 in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio.

Frank Carl ELLIS was born 27 December 1924. He served in WWII aboard the USS Antona. He married Betty Lou DEWESE. Frank died on 23 April 1985 in Toledo.

Marvin ELLIS was born 11 November 1926. He married Joyce BAUER. He died on 3 December 2001 in Toledo.

June ELLIS was born 31 May 1930. She married Raymond NIESE. She died on 5 September 2007.
